Netflix’s Time Cut is a throwback movie in multiple ways. It’s a teen drama set in 2003, with cliques, school bullies and Avril Lavigne blasting on CDs. It’s also a slasher movie with a masked villain targeting teenagers, including Summer Field. And lastly, Time Cut is a time travel story that takes Lucy Field way back to 2003 — just before her sister’s murder.
For stars Antonia Gentry and Madison Bailey, signing on to Time Cut “was not a question.” Both were interested in the multiple genres of Time Cut, and were ready to jump from their respective Netflix original series to a feature film. Talking to CBR, Bailey discussed the transition from Outer Banks to appearing in Time Cut. She and Gentry also joked about playing sisters despite not resembling one another, and how Summer and Lucy have better instincts than most horror movie heroes.
CBR: What was it about Time Cut that convinced you to jump onboard? Were you both fans of slasher horror films and 2000s teen movies?
Madison Bailey: Yes. I feel like this is right up my alley of what I like to watch. The 2003 time travel aspect of it is my favorite. It was just so fun. It was not a question. I was like, “I have to do this.”
Antonia Gentry: My mom and I would always watch old slashers from the 80s or 90s. It was on my bucket list to be in a horror film, especially a slasher. I was just like, “Well, I have to.” It’s also my first movie. I wanted to check off some boxes, and [Time Cut] checked some boxes off.
You’re leading this movie after starring in two of Netflix’s biggest shows. Madison, how would you compare filming Time Cut to what you’ve experienced on the hugely popular Outer Banks?
Bailey: I think we both filmed this movie with one season out of each. I had just finished filming Season 2 [of Outer Banks], but it wasn’t out yet. It’s definitely different. Of course, [filming a movie] is a different tone, and it’s also our first movie. It’s [my] first time leading a film, and [Antonia’s] first time shooting a film.
Antonia, you were saying you wanted to do a slasher film, and you got to do classic slasher chase sequences in Time Cut. What was your favorite chase scene in the movie?
Gentry: There’s a scene where Summer’s running through the barn, and I’m knocking on the door. There were a couple of times when I moved too quickly. I was actually booking it. And they were like, “No, no, no, no, no, you have to slow down for the camera.” And I was like, “Slow down? But I’m supposed to be scared. I don’t understand.” They said, “No, you’re crossing the frame too fast. Please slow down.” So I was really into it, but it was really fun. I liked winding through the barn and getting to knock things over.
At least that means your characters in Time Cut have good instincts. Most people in horror movies don’t know what to do, and they just stand around.
Bailey: You’re right. I didn’t even think about that. We were like, “We gotta go.” [Laughs]
You’re playing sisters who don’t know each other, but still build an emotional bond. What was the point in filming where you felt like you could convincingly be another familial duo in the horror genre?
Bailey: Did we ever get to that point? [Laughs] Did we ever feel that way? As somebody who’s adopted, none of my siblings look like me. So it didn’t take that long [to pull it off].
Gentry: Yeah, my brother and I don’t look alike. We have our mom’s eyes, but that’s about it.
Bailey: I don’t know. Immediately, when I met you, I was like, “This is my sister.”
Gentry: We really clicked. We had that chemistry, so that made it easy. It was super fun to pretend to be each other’s sisters.
